What happens at a Fix session?

When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by a member of the team - We are really looking forward to meeting you! You’ll be asked to sign in and give a few quick details about your bike: what’s not working, when it was last used, or any concerns you have.

At your session, Paddy from Swale Cycles, an experienced mechanic will:

  • Check your bike for common issues
  • Carry out basic repairs and adjustments
  • Offer tips on looking after your bike
  • Let you know if anything else needs attention

Be sure to ask Paddy any questions you may have.

What's included?

The following checks are usually included:

    • Brakes- caliber and cable adjustments, cable and pad replacement.
    • Gears- Indexing, adjustment and cable replacement.
    • Chain- Check for wear, lubricate if needed.
    • Tyres- Puncture repair/tube replacement, inflated to recommended pressure.
    • Other- check all nuts and bolts are correctly torqued, headset and bottom bracket check, check bar plugs and cable end caps and replace if missing.

Advice- Paddy will advise you on how to maintain your bike and what might need more attention.

      What Fix sessions don’t cover

To keep sessions accessible and efficient, there are a few things that aren’t usually covered:

      • Electric bikes and hydraulic brakes: these need specialist tools and aren’t normally serviced at free basic bike repair sessions.
      • Major or complex repairs: jobs like suspension work, wheel truing or full overhauls will be referred to a professional bike shop.
      • Bike theft prevention: we focus on maintenance – not locks, GPS trackers or security advice.
      • Bike covers: while useful, these aren’t discussed or supplied at Fix sessions.
      • Full servicing: Fix sessions offer quick safety checks and light repairs – they’re not a substitute for a full bike service. You need to be over 18 to take part in a FIX event.

These events are for people aged over 18.
